Unsurprisingly, Dowland figures large in this landscape. But it’s a nice touch to begin and end the recital with Robert Johnson, who wrote so much for the theatre, and it’s his setting of Shakespeare’s Full Fathom Five which sends our keynote rippling through the rest of the disc. Barnfield’s image of words and music binding friends together is metamorphosed into an image of immortality through the survival of art through the ages. Another kind of journey, “rich and strange”.
From the England of Johnson, Morley and Dowland, Kirkby and Lindberg move on to Italy and France, clearly demonstrating how influential the former country’s style was on one Georg Schimmelpfenning and Schütz by including a couple of typically Mannerist monodies by Sigismondo d’India nearby. A who’s who of French air de cour exponents follow, the influence of whom, in their turn, on the English ayre is made clear with a return to England and the songs of John Danyel. Johnson’s wordless Pavan makes us end where we began.
Kirkby and Lindberg yet again prove ideal partners; there’s a certain detachment in their execution which, far from being an obstacle to enjoyment, brings great clarity and allows the slightest nuance to make itself felt so much more forcefully. Here, music and poetry do indeed agree.
