Le Jardin Secret were the winners of the Early Music Network Young Artists’ Competition last year, and “Musique pour Mazarin!” (why the exclamation mark?) is one of the results. The programme is a mixture of short French and Italian pieces: French restraint is contrasted with Italian passion, but examples by Charpentier and Campra – both active after Mazarin’s death – show that the two styles were not irreconcilable.
Luigi Rossi is represented by two pieces: “Non pianga e non sospiri” from Orfeo, the lavish production of which was followed by five years of exile for Mazarin, is done straight; “Mio core languisce”, as arranged by Le Jardin’s harpsichordist, David Blunden, includes an instrumental introduction and interludes. Similarly, Charpentier’s “Sans frayeur”, simply done by Johannette Zomer and Fred Jacobs (Channel Classics, 5/08), is here doubled in length: no complaint implied, given the beautiful gamba-playing of Romina Lischka.
The purely instrumental pieces include Michelangelo Rossi’s seventh Toccata expertly played by Blunden, whose nicely judged rubato emphasises the battily chromatic ending. Elizabeth Dobbin’s expressive soprano gives almost continual pleasure: “almost”, because “bending” sustained notes is fast becoming a mannerism among singers of this repertoire.
