Paganini himself is represented only by the brief Duet for One Violin, a typically tricksy but atypically understated delight. Feng’s dispatch of display pieces or arrangements by Fritz Kreisler, Nathan Milstein and Ruggiero Ricci also has violinistic chutzpah to spare. Enter Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst (1812-65) to remind us of the worst excesses of the post-Paganini cult. In the 10 minutes of indignities inflicted on “The Last Rose of Summer”, Feng displays astonishing dexterity. But Ernst’s arrangement of Schubert’s “Erlkönig” reaches rock-bottom, requiring the kind of melodramatic over-accentuation which the original song conspicuously avoids. It only lasts for four minutes, however, and, given the power of Feng’s playing in Berio, Schnittke and the rest, it shouldn’t deprive this disc of many fascinated purchasers.
