Author:
Memory of that occasion at Covent Garden brings with it the 'but' which readers will no doubt have foreseen. His programme then included the aria of Boito's Faust, ''Giunto sul passo estremo'', heard here also; and it stood out then as the one item in which a genuinely imaginative musical sensibility seemed to be at work. It was a thing of light-and-shade, of sadness, passion and resignation, whereas practically all the rest had consisted of performances which offered little to remember save the splendid voice. In the present recital, ''Giunto sul passo'' still impresses, but is less isolated, for much of the singing here has its lightenings and intensifications, its awareness of mood and general feeling. For the most part, however, I can't catch more than that: general feeling, without localized insight or concentrated passion. Perhaps in ''Pourquoi me reveiller?'' and ''Che gelida manina'': these do provide the glimpse of a man singing because a particular emotion of the moment compels him to. Elsewhere there seems to be a limitation, perhaps of temperament. ''La donna e mobile'', for instance, is terribly straight-faced, ''Asile hereditaire'' purely formal. In the excerpt from Polyeucte I had forgotten at what point in the opera the aria comes, and tried to guess at the emotion, with very little assistance from the singer. Even Romeo's address to (as he supposes) the dead Juliette carries little of grieving love in its ''O ma femme! O ma bien-aimee!'' It is a pity that the art of portamento, best when instinctive, is so generally lost: it makes all the difference to a singer's natural expressiveness.
As always, one has to reflect that the art has time to develop in such respects: the voice is there, and gloriously so, as is the basic soundness of its production. This first recital is welcome for its judiciously varied repertoire and the excellence of its accompaniments, and most especially, of course, for the opportunity it provides of hearing this tenor, who has probably created more interest than any other of the younger generation.'
