Rossini Maometto II

  • Maometto Secondo

Predictably, Philips's pioneering recording of Rossini's Maometto II, his penultimate Neapolitan opera, sounds even better on CD than it did on LP; and in matters of editing in extraneous effects it is marginally cleaner. Certainly the set will come as a revelation to those who mistakenly consider Rossini to be successful only as a composer of opera buffa. Purloining Dr Johnson on Shakespeare, we might say that Rossini's tragedy is all skill where his comedy is instinct; but by 1820 that skill was of a high order as men like Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi later, readily acknowledged. Let's hope that it won't be too long before we have on CD a French-language performance of Maometto II's Paris revision, Le siege de Corinthe.'
