Author: John Warrack
The sardonic and the dramatic are excluded, but the selection manages to include something from every one of the Five (Balakirev, always good at advising the others, comes off least well himself here). There are touching contributions from Dargomizhsky, Borodin and Arensky. Many of the most beautiful songs are settings of Pushkin, which is not surprising. Russia’s best-loved poet is often half-way towards music. You need only listen to Russians reciting Pushkin – which they will do at the slightest encouragement or none – to hear musical lines flowering.'
