One wonders how many collectors want to buy a collection of this kind; in effect a concert—recorded live. The music-making is consistently polished and it has all the features of warmth and direct communication that distinguish a live occasion, yet the programme is essentially arbitrary. The opening Mozart symphony is fresh and vital, the gentle melancholy of the slow movement nicely delineated. All three soloists play with appealing character. Matthew Wilkie, the bassoonist, has a particularly attractive timbre; the slightly dolorous mood of the Largo contrasts nicely with the geniality of the outer allegros. The Marcello Oboe Concerto is even more memorable; its Adagio with its limpid 'vocal' cantilena is played most beautifully by Douglas Boyd.
Wolf's Italian Serenade is surprisingly little recorded, a liltingly memorable piece, it is one of the highlights of the concert. The two Strauss waltzes have both affection and zest and no lack of rhythmic subtlety, but the hall's acoustics suit them less well than the rest of the programme: one would have liked a slightly more sumptuous effect. But in the other works the sound is admirable and the balance of the wind soloists is nicely judged. The effect is highly realistic; full, transparent and vivid.'
