Author: Alan Blyth
Jerusalem's clean, lyrical voice and impeccable style sounds exemplary in the Weber and Wagner items, quite free of the wobble or guttural sound that afflict many a German Heldentenor. His technique is fully equipped to cope with any and every hurdle while his tone remains consistently pleasing. He has since sung Parsifal's great outburst of agony with more intensity (vide the complete set of Wagner's opera under Barenboim on Teldec, 10/91), although the reading here is involved enough. Where he fails—comparatively—is in the pieces by Nicolai, Flotow, d'Albert and Korngold missing the individuality of phrasing and timbre evinced by such tenors of the past as Tauber, Patzak and Wunderlich, while the Gluck aria lacks Thill's or Aler's poise and fluency, partly because it is taken too slowly. The accompaniments, the Fidelio item apart, are no more than adequate. The recording is excellent.'
