The quiet East Midlands town of Southwell, near Newark, is best known as the home of the Bramley apple. However, in recent years its beautiful Minster has received a growing number of organ tourists drawn to two pipe instruments, a Wood/Binns of 1992 for nave use and a screen organ by Nicholsons completed in 1996, in a scheme masterminded by the present organist, Paul Hale. This very full disc features the latter instrument in a far-reaching programme ranging from Buxtehude’s Chorale Fantasia, Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern to Giles Swayne’s 17-minute-long Riff-raff (composed in 1983).
There are excursions to Norway for Egil Hovland’s exhilarating Toccata Now thank we all our God (of 1973) and to Windsor for William Harris’s A fancy, dedicated to Percy Whitlock, and breathlessly played by the assistant organist, Philip Rushworth. Much of the rest of the programme is either French or Francophile, the earliest example being Dandrieu’s baroque variations on the Easter hymn O filii et filiae. Karg-Elert’s sumptuous and impressionistic Harmonies du soir, dating from 1911, was dedicated to Alexandre Guilmant. The four Dubois and two Vierne pieces work well in this warm but not over-reverberant acoustic. Generally speaking, Rushworth is the hastier player while Hale shows more poetic insight. The recording quality is admirable and the insert-notes by Ian Wells a model of how this sort of thing should be done. Recommended.'
