Author: Lionel Salter
The two distinguished pianists here (not Spanish but Portuguese, be it noted) constitute a team of the very top class: their playing has a marvellous clarity (aided by a splendidly natural-sounding and well-balanced recording that allows every detail to tell – and which I commend to the notice of my technical colleagues), great vivacity, the utmost precision and crisp attack, strong rhythmicality combined with sensitive flexibility, and above all the most subtle shadings of dynamics and colour throughout.
Personally, I might have preferred Falla’s “Pantomime” to be a little cooler and the “Ritual Fire Dance” a fraction faster, but these are not criticisms. Except for the brilliant Infante pieces, all the items here are arrangements, none more skilful than those by Longas, Samazeuilh and the legendary Frank Marshall (Granados’s pupil and Larrocha’s teacher).'
