Doubtless there are those who enjoy hearing wind quintets play just about anything, as well as those who enjoy hearing the music of the Strauss family played by any unusual combination. They can enjoy the fun of the Fledermaus Quadrille, the simplicity of the elder Johann Strauss’s early Kettenbrucken and the lively concluding quick-polka Auf Ferienreisen!. They may appreciate, too, the playful Zemlinsky Humoresque, a test-piece written for American high school students, or Alfred Prinz’s six-minute paraphrase of themes from Die lustige Witwe – possibly designed to appeal more to those who don’t like the original operetta than those who do! Others, though, may find it difficult to catch the appeal of a collection that is at times stiffly played and which conspicuously lacks the soothing string sound and sheer variety of orchestral colouring that means so much to the Viennese dance. Not surprisingly, it is the military marches that seem to come off most naturally – Schrammel’s Wien bleibt Wien! and Strauss senior’s Radetzky Marsch. Doubtless those for whom the combination of ensemble and music appeals will not be disappointed.'
