My choirboy days were 'enlivened' by occasional concerts in the Choir School at which despite our ill-concealed and unseemly mirth, the Gentlemen would disport themselves, red above the stiff collar, in such works as these. Our honest opinion was that they weren't fit to be let out on their own (the Choirmaster washed his hands of these revels) and that the expression they shamelessly displayed would be better controlled—or, better still, bottled. The opinion of a choirboy may well be a bit biased, of course. But I'm absolutely certain that, had I heard these songs as they appear on this sparkling record, I would have been as enthralled then as I am now. There's no trace of exaggeration here and the sense of fun is well calculated to tickle the audience, not just the singers. Such an expert group as this might, indeed, be tempted to play it too cool, but they are in the capable hands of Mark Brown who not only stands no nonsense but makes sure also that points are not missed. The recording is pretty close and direct with the CD producing excellent results.'
