Several anthems may be new to most listeners. The economical polyphony of Percy Whitlock’s Glorious in Heaven runs a strong vigorous course till allowed to luxuriate and ‘be beautiful’ in the ‘Amen’s. Stanley Vann’s Behold, how good and joyful a thing it is is written with the benefit of an expert choir-trainer’s ear for choral sonorities. Hubert Middleton’s Let my prayers be sent forth is more than a technical tour de force (the two choirs singing in canon at one bar’s interval). John Scott’s Behold, O God our defender is a particularly loving setting, paying tribute to Herbert Howells (who set it too) but movingly personal as well. The performances are excellent, as are William McVicker’s booklet-notes, and the great echo’s presence is felt as friend, not foe.
