The English Connection
The playing on this CD is excellent and the internal balance is first rate. With the LP I did question the slight prominence of the horn in The Lark Ascending but that now seems to me perfectly all right, while Iona Brown plays this ravishing piece beautifully.
Two points of criticism about the note for the CD. The long one from the LP sleeve is so squeezed into the inevitably small booklet that it is uncomfortable to read. Would not a little editing have improved this? And as I said before, The Lark Ascending is not scored for violin and string orchestra; it is for chamber orchestra (strings with two of each woodwinds, two horns and triangle). It seems a shame to leave such a gaffe uncorrected.'
