Author: Richard Lawrence
The composer did not benefit from sales, alas, as he was already dead; but Maurice Steger has taken the publisher at his word and offers four of the sonatas on his “similar other instrument”, the recorder. Indeed, all but two short pieces, for harpsichord and chitarrone respectively, include the recorder rather than the expected violin or, perhaps, cornett.
The recorder is not as expressive an instrument as the violin. To anticipate possible charges of monotony, Steger moves from treble to descant to tenor, even varying the instruments of each type. He is supported by a changing battery of continuo instruments which, again, keeps the ear tickled. Fontana’s Sonata No 4 is particularly attractive with its lovely, bubbling dulcian, played by Christian Beuse.
The pieces generally consist of short movements; La Pighetta by Tarquinio Merula includes a ground bass, with an independent part played on the cello. Many of the pieces have titles which, annoyingly, are not explained in the booklet note. Only Marco Uccellini shows any harmonic adventurousness, with chromatic phrases at the end of his Symphonia La Stucharda. Maurice Steger is a player of wonderful dexterity, and his colleagues are excellent. But this is not an essential purchase.
