EMI's priorities in choice of material for CD release sometimes seem strange. Presumably this is chosen primarily to increase the Perlman discography, though the recording tends to show its age and the digital remastering has only served to emphasize the balance which places the spotlit soloist way out in front of the not especially telling orchestral backcloth. That is not to criticize Barenboim's accompaniments which are always sympathetic. Martin Cooper thought well of the lesser-known Fourth Concerto, considering it original in form (it has four movements), with the Scherzo and finale possessing ''a number of interesting features''. He also felt that ''Itzhak Perlman treats both works with the greatest seriousness and discovers real nobility and a classical beauty of line and feeling in this music, while doing full justice to the brilliant feats of virtuosity demanded by many passages in both works.'' I quote this view at length, as mine is that the Fourth Concerto is melodically less memorable than the (justifiably) better-known Fifth, although the Scherzo is rather neat. But I wouldn't take either to a Desert Island, in spite of the seriousness of approach, and obvious accomplishment of the performance. Playing time: 50'59''.'
