Author:
Here are the plums from the London Sinfonietta's three-LP Weill set recorded after their 1975 appearances at the Berlin Festwochen. Is it too much to hope that a second CD will bring the rest (including a fine version of Happy End) back into circulation? Certainly the current issue has just about everything—superb recorded sound, terrific impact without exaggeration (except in Mahagonny where the voices are deliberately closemiked, to excellent effect), performances which outshine even the Sinfonietta's more recent efforts for Simon Rattle, and above all music representative of the finest of Weill's European styles—the Violin Concerto does not quite measure up to Prokofiev or Stravinsky, but it is not far short either. A classic.'
