This weekend, Simon Russell Beale and The Sixteen explore Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 in a BBC2 programme entitled Monteverdi in Mantua: The Genius of the Vespers.

In this clip, along with the choir - led by founder and conductor Harry Christophers - he introduces some of the key themes behind the programme's argument that the work represents one of the major turning points in Western music.

Monteverdi in Mantua: The Genius of the Vespers is broadcast of BBC2 on Saturday April 4 at 9pm.
