Not published for 60 or more years and never recorded, suddenly Taneyev's First and Third symphonies pop up on two CDs within a year. Fortunately, at least from the specialist collector's point of view, the two conductors have very different interpretative notions. Sanderling's spacious, lyrical approach adds fully 12 minutes to Polyansky's playing-time. The latter, no speed-merchant himself, injects a degree of urgency that Taneyev may or may not have envisaged, but that certainly helps to keep the music buoyant. As a listening experience pure and simple, the more refined playing and superior recording quality on the Chandos disc is more immediately appealing. But what we hear on the new disc - at times more intimate, at times more unvarnished - may well be just as close, if not closer, to how the composer imagined his music, even perhaps helping us to understand why he refused to include either work in his acknowledged canon. At its bargain price, and with a particularly helpful booklet-note, the new Sanderling disc is perfectly recommendable; but I would not want to be without the finely argued special case that Polyansky pleads for these symphonies.
