Refined, delicate, and instinctive performances bring Machaut’s polyphony to life

With considerable, indeed, awesome expertise, Britain’s leading medieval consort finishes its deep dive into recording Machaut’s polyphony and monody with this 11th release, among the most interesting and engaging. 17 works for one, two or three voices, realised with refinement, delicacy and a seemingly instinctive ensemble – works that may seem unapproachably academic and intellectual on paper – spring to life in these unparalleled performances, technically and emotionally supreme. There’s a little more (welcome) bloom on the recorded sound than for some previous volumes and an almost palpable feeling of culmination for this fitting finale to an outstanding series and a ‘must have’ for collectors of Ars Nova polyphony.
