Buxtehude's piece combines a stiff north German Protestant manner with a flamboyant Italian style

The austere formality of Buxtehude's seven cantatas that comprise Membra Jesu Nostri are very much part of this work's beauty. All this comes through in this recording from the Dutch-based Luthers Bach Ensemble, who were originally formed over 15 years ago to perform Bach cantatas in a historically informed manner. Here their collective expertise is turned to the older north German baroque master, and it pays massive dividends. Depicting Christ's suffering by focusing on different parts of his body, Buxtehude's piece combines a stiff north German Protestant manner with a flamboyant Italian style. The response to this from Brondas and his musicians is nothing short of ideal, with them achieving transparent textures and emotionally appropriate responses to Buxtehude's word-setting.
