This elegant new edition includes three tasteful cadenza options by Robert Levin for the third movement

Wiener Urtext's Haydn editions by Christa Landon and Ulrich Leisinger have always been second to none, so these single sonata issues are extremely welcome – especially as they feature sonatas not frequently performed in public.

The four-movement G major Sonata Hob XV1:6 would make a wonderful project for any post-Grade 5 student in search of a substantial but manageable pre-Beethovenian project. It is an ideal introduction to sonata form, with no movement lasting more than four pages. Originally entitled ‘Partita’ rather than Sonata, the work is the only one of Haydn's early sonatas for which an autograph survives.

This elegant new edition includes three tasteful cadenza options by Robert Levin for the third movement. It also includes Levin's general notes on how to interpret ornamentation and deal with articulation in Haydn's sonatas. He reminds us that ‘slurs not only prescribe legato playing, but are also to be understood as decrescendos, with the last note normally lighter.’
