The editor of our brand-new ballet special, Sarah Kirkup, introduces this digital magazine

Recordings of ballet music have woven their way through the pages of Gramophone for nearly a century, but we've rarely written about the dancing. Time now to put that to rights …

We're excited to announce the publication of a digital special: Ballet on Screen. With nearly 20 reviews of ballet DVDs released in the past year, written by the world’s best dance writers, this digital special is free to access. Ballet on Screen's editor Sarah Kirkup talks to Gramophone's Martin Cullingford about the magazine's contents, including its two features, one exploring Dame Margot Fonteyn’s legacy on film, the other investigating the surging popularity of ballet in the cinema. In addition, it provides comprehensive listings of the best ballet and dance performances worldwide, as well as news stories, interviews and competitions.

The Tchaikovsky ballet excerpts, played by the Academic State Symphony Orchestra of Russia 'Evgeny Svetlanov' and conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, are included courtesy of Gramophone's current Label of the Year, Pentatone (stream them on Apple Music - The Nutcracker and Swan Lake) and the excerpt from Max Richter's score for Woolf Works comes courtesy of Deutsche Grammophon (listen to the complete recording on Apple Music).
