New York company opens Verdi's Don Carlos with powerful show of support

Today's video is a powerful and moving gesture of support for Ukrainians facing the Russian invasion of their country, taken from the New York Met Opera last night. The company opened its performance of Verdi's Don Carlos with, firstly, a moment of silence, followed by the Ukrainian national anthem.

In sharing the film earlier today, writer Alex Ross highlighted that among the Met Orchestra and Chorus, conducted by Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, standing without a score and with a hand over his heart, is Vladyslav Buialskyi, a Ukrainian singer making his Met. The bass-baritone is a member of the Met's Lindemann Young Artist Programme.
