Boston’s WGBH long has offered some of America’s most intelligent and vibrant classical music programming. For some time I’ve subscribed to their Classical Performance Podcast via Itunes, and I always look forward to the show’s complete chamber and solo works played by established and emerging artists.

The show recorded at WGBH’s Fraser Performance Studio this past April 14th features Marc-André Hamelin in the Liszt B Minor Sonata, a work that this singular pianist has only recently taken up. It’s an extraordinary performance. Naturally, Liszt’s notorious octaves effortlessly shake from Hamelin’s hands, while the massive chords and treacherous leaps are dead of center and splinter free. More importantly, though, Hamelin’s musical intelligence and strong sense of architecture are on optimum form.
