The Listening Room (2/5/21)

Sunday, May 2, 2021

Some of the most ear-catching recent releases – including Joby Talbot from Miloš, Tchaikovsky from Paavo Järvi, and Ysaÿe played by James Ehnes – and a tribute to the late and great Christa Ludwig

A new guitar concerto by Joby Talbot played by Miloš from his Decca album of two new concertos, Tchaikovsky’s Second from Paavo Järvi’s impressive new symphony cycle from Zurich, Schubert from Joyce DiDonato (listen to her discuss Winterreise in a recent Gramophone Podcast) and Ilker Arcayürek, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin as pianist. And Mahler sung by the incomparable Christa Ludwig who died last weekend.

Other fare includes a magnificent brass work by Richard Strauss, Eugène Ysaÿe paying tribute to his colleague, Fritz Kreisler and Mozart sung by Mari Eriksmoen.

Pre-release tracks include Mozart from Leif Ove Andsnes and Beethoven from Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax.
