Yuja Wang: Rachmaninov from the remarkable piano star | Gianandrea Noseda: from Beethoven to Walker in DC | Jordi Savall: a conductor who draws the world together

Gramophone September 2023 cover

Our September 2023 issue’s cover artist is one of the most prominent stars of the piano, Yuja Wang, whose astonishing pianism and musicianship have long been dazzling the musical world. Tim Parry catches up with the great pianist, who talks candidly about the pressure of giving live performances that will be captured for posterity, her love of Rachmaninov and a life on stage.

Also in this issue, Gianandrea Noseda, the conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington DC, talks to David Patrick Stearns about performing and recording complete cycles, including Beethoven’s symphonies, and discovering the music of George Walker.

Plus we meet with Jordi Savall, whose vast repertoire extends across centuries (from the 13th to the 19th) and encompasses music from around the globe (from Bangladesh to Peru).

Elsewhere in the issue, this month’s Icons focuses on the long career of the pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, who made many of his most famous recordings for Decca during the 1970s, while in Classics Reconsidered, Jeremy Nicholas and Harriet Smith return to Radu Lupu’s 1973 recording of the piano concertos by Grieg and Schumann with the LSO and André Previn.

September’s Collection features Ravel’s masterly orchestration of Mussorgsky’s highly original Pictures at an Exhibition, and our Contemporary Composers feature this month is Australian-born Sadie Harrison. September’s The Musician & The Score explores Mozart’s Piano Quartet No 1 in G minor, K478 with violinist Francesca Dego and pianist Federico Colli, and My Music features the radio presenter Ritula Shah.

Plus, as always, we review the latest classical music releases and select the very best as Editor’s Choices.
