John Storgårds has been named Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic. The Finnish conductor first conducted the orchestra in 2010, becoming Principal Guest Conductor in 2012 and Chief Guest Conductor in 2017.

The years since have included annual Proms performances, Sibelius and Nielsen symphony cycles, and from a recording perspective a number of releases on Chandos Records in repertoire ranging from Shostakovich to Antheil. Forthcoming BBC Philharmonic Orchestra performances include Shostakovich symphonies Nos 13 and 15 at the Bridgewater Hall.

Other posts held by Storgårds include Artistic Director of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, a role he has held for over 25 years. His recording of Hans Abrahamsen’s Schnee with the ensemble, released on Dacapo, was shortlisted in this year’s Gramophone Awards.

Storgårds succeeds Omer Meir Wellber in the post, and follows other conductors including Juanjo Mena, Gianandrea Noseda and Yan Pascal Tortelier in holding the title.

‘Over my many years of collaboration with the BBC Philharmonic, our partnership has been built on great music making and trust,’ said Storgårds of the appointment. ‘Together, we have already completed a number of fantastic projects; tours in the North of England and at the orchestra’s home in Salford and at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, appearances at the BBC Proms, and our many international tours and festival visits.

'We have also made many dynamic recordings in our Salford studio, most prominently for BBC Radio 3 and our label partners at Chandos Records. The BBC Philharmonic is widely known as an extraordinarily brilliant, skilful and versatile orchestra. I am very proud to be continuing our musical journey together with the wonderful musicians and great staff of this fine ensemble!’ he added.
