Thomas Carroll plays the opening movement, taken from the newly released EP on Orchid Classics

Today's Video of the Day is a dramatic, atmospheric film featuring Thomas Carroll playing the opening movement of Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s Excelsus, a seven-movement suite for solo cello. It's taken from the EP of the work released today on Orchid Classics - a world premiere recording of the piece.

Excelsus takes inspiration from the structure and tone of the Requiem mass. Thomas Carroll describes the work as 'sincere and touching. These words are often used, but I don’t know of many pieces that take the listener on such an extraordinary journey in such a short amount of time.'

Cheryl Frances-Hoad’s Excelsus is released today - you can listen to the whole EP via Apple Music.
