Centenary celebrations at the BBC will come to life this October with an eight-hour continuous soundscape on BBC Radio 3

Radio 3 will celebrate it’s centenary with an 8-hour broadcast on Sunday 30 October, ‘Soundscape of a Century’, looking back on the last 100 years of classical music broadcasting and BBC history. The programme will combine news events with unforgettable voices of the past, intertwined with the classical music of the time.

Speaking of the anniversary, Radio 3’s controller Alan Davey said: “We celebrate 100 years of Broadcasting and the way Radio uniquely affects the lives of audiences using sound to celebrate and reflect the work of radio pioneers who changed the world through the glorious multi-tonal and multi-dimensional experience radio offers...”

Other events on BBC Radio 3 marking the centenary will include a four-part Sunday feature, ‘The Sonic Century’, focusing on its history, key figures and tools in radio broadcasting. Programmes on experimental radio, development of the microphone and radio of the future will run from Sun 23 October – Sunday 13 November.

The BBC has also announced other elements to it's Autumn season. Anniversary celebrations are scheduled for Vaughn Williams’ 150, exploring his life and music through programmes throughout October. Special episodes on Choral Evensong, Composer of the Week, Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert, Record Review, Sunday Feature, The Essay and The Listening Service will look back on one of 20th Century’s most important composers.
