The BBC Concert Orchestra has announced the launch of 'Baroque Remixed: Call for Scores', a search for the next generation of young composers. The orchestra is calling for a contemporary interpretation of Purcell’s Rondeau, from his Abdelazer Suite, the work that provided Benjamin Britten with the inspiration for his famous Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Entries are open to postgraduates and fellows studying composition at a UK institution; up to six shortlisted composers will be invited to a workshop with the orchestra on January 12, 2013 at the BBC Maida Vale Studios.

Entrants are encouraged to incorporate diverse contemporary inspirations into their orchestral compositions, from jazz and non-Western idioms, to ‘avant-garde’ compositional techniques and electronics.

The judging panel will include conductor and founder of the Orchestra in a Field festival, Charles Hazlewood, the Oscar-winning composer Anne Dudley (who was the BBC Concert Orchestra’s first composer-in-association), and the orchestra’s general manager Andrew Connolly.

The two finalists will have their compositions performed by the orchestra at the Roundhouse in Camden on March 11 next year, in a concert broadcast live on Radio 3. More details about the initiative, including terms and conditions, can be found on the orchestra’s website.

The deadline for entries is November 26, 2012.
