The BBC Symphony Orchestra has created a new official position for conductor Semyon Bychkov – the Günter Wand Conducting Chair. The title reflects the orchestra’s ‘affection and respect’ for Wand, who was appointed BBC Symphony principal guest conductor 30 years ago, and its desire to collaborate with Bychkov on significant projects in the future.

‘I am deeply honoured by the BBC Symphony Orchestra’s gesture,’ said Bychkov. ‘The relationship it had with Günter Wand resulted in many memorable achievements, which live in the minds of those who witnessed them. To be asked to join in this tradition holds a very special meaning to me.’

Bychkov first worked with the BBC Symphony at the BBC Proms five years ago, and has subsequently conducted the orchestra on numerous occasions during its Barbican and Proms seasons. He next appears with the orchestra in its Proms concert this evening, conducting Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony, the UK premiere of Richard Dubugnon’s Battlefield Concerto with piano soloists Katia and Marielle Labèque, and Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben.
