From fast food to Twitter, today’s culture is one of instant gratification, and EMI Classics is determined not to be left in the cold. In a first for the label, two live performances will be recorded tonight and tomorrow, prepared in the foyer, and sold to audience members as they leave the event. The limited edition recordings, available only on the night, will capture a special collaboration by the City of Birmingham Symphony and Mariinsky Theatre Orchestras and Choirs conducted by Valery Gergiev in Berlioz’s monumental Requiem. Taking place at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, the recordings are made in partnership with the LiveHereNow initiative. "Through history, recordings have endeavoured to capture the essence of the live experience and make it available for listeners to appreciate again and again,” said Stephen Johns, head of A&R at EMI Classics. “The unique nature of this project is heightened by the one-off combination of performers…conducted by one of the great musicians of our time.”
