The British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) have announced the 35 works that will compete for prizes at this year's British Composer Awards. This year more than 300 works were submitted and the final shortlist includes nominations for Judith Weir (the current Master of the Queen's Music), Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Thomas Adès, Jonathan Dove, John McCabe, Sally Beamish and Mark-Anthony Turnage. Birtwistle's The Moth Requiem, which is shortlisted in the Choral category, was also nominated for a Gramophone Award this year (in a recording by the BBC Singers on Signum). 

The awards ceremony takes place at Goldsmiths' Hall, London, on December 2 and will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on December 6.
