The Digital Concert Hall, the virtual concert hall of the Berlin Philharmoniker, played host yesterday to one of the orchestras to have emerged from Venezuela’s inspired and inspiring musical education project, El Sistema. The Berliner Philharmoniker has for many years supported this initiative founded by José Antonio Abreu and, following a visit to the Philharmonie by the Simón Bolivar Youth Orchestra two years ago, invited the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra to the hall to perform. 

The concert was conducted by Christian Vásquez (Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony) and Sir Simon Rattle (Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony). Following last night's live broadcast, it will be available for viewing for 24 hours from 8pm this evening.

The Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra is made up of 200 musicians aged between 14 and 19 and is named after the Venezuelan composer and pianist. Christian Vásquez, a protégé of Abreu, is one of the most talked about of the new generation of Venezuelan conductors.
