The National Centre for Early Music Composers Award has been presented to 11-year-old Lilly Vadaneaux in the 18 years and under category – the competition’s youngest winner to date – and to 20-year-old Joseph Howard in the 19 to 25 years category. The prizes are presented in partnership with BBC Radio 3 and UK Baroque ensemble Florilegium.

Young composers, resident in the UK, were invited to create a contemporary response to the Baroque dance suite, scored for flute or recorder, violin or viola d'amore, cello or piccolo-cello, and harpsichord or organ. Seven finalists were selected from over 70 entrants to attend workshops at the NCEM in York with Florilegium and Brunel University professor and composer Christopher Fox, and to have their works performed by Florilegium at a public concert attended by a panel of judges.

The winning entries, Lilly Vadaneaux’s Sarabande in F sharp minor and Joseph Howard’s Move! will be premiered by Florilegium at the Bath International Music Festival on June 1 and recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 3's Early Music Show on June 23.
