Ever since Sir Simon Rattle turned the international spotlight on Birmingham, his successors have been scrutinised with critical detail. The CBSO’s latest musical boss has acquitted himself magnificently, with stupendous discs of Tchaikovsky and Strauss. But Nelsons is much in demand at the highest level, with engagements at Bayreuth, the Met, Covent Garden and with the Berlin Phil. This year he also conducted the 50th anniversary performance of Britten's War Requiem at Coventry Cathedral.

Nelsons' DVD of Puccini's Turandot from the Met was of particular note this year, with our critic, David Patrick Stearns, commenting: 'Turandot is certainly a conductor's opera and Andris Nelsons finds layers of sound and meaning unlike anything I've heard since Karajan's audio recording on DG.'
