The violin virtuoso performs a lesser-known concerto from an 18th century French composer

Violinist Francesca Dego joins Jonathon Heyward and the London Symphony Orchestra for this Video of the Day to celebrate the New Year!

The 3rd movement from Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges's Violin Concerto, the video is a clip from A New Dawn, a London Symphony Orchestra concert of three orchestral works released exclusively on Apple Music as a concert video and in spatial audio.

The story of composer and violinist Joseph Bologne is a fascinating one. Joseph Bologne  (1745-1799), was born on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe. He was the son of an enslaved woman of Senegalese origin and a French plantation owner and was educated in France from the age of 8.

Relatively little is known about his training as a violinist or composer. Despite his virtuosity and composing talent, Bologne's racial background made it impossible for him to advance. Musicians would often refuse to work with him due to his race and his story was distorted and largely hidden following his death.

The concert was recorded in the Jerwood Hall at LSO St Luke’s, and marks its partnership with Apple Music to release a unique performance each year for the next three years.
