The great soprano, who has died aged 74, in one of her most memorable roles - Madame Lidoine in Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites

The great soprano Jessye Norman has died at the age of 74 and, as a tribute, the Metropolitan Opera have posted some of her most cherished appearances in New York on their YouTube channel. 

The following extract from Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites, filmed in 1987, makes manifest the qualities that made Norman such a powerful presence on stage and in the recording studio:
