Deep insights into Tchaikovsky's symphonies from the conductor as he embarks on his 'Tchaikovsky Project'

Semyon Bychkov's inaugural recording in his 'Tchaikovsky Project' with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring the Sixth Symphony and Romeo and Juliet, is an Editor's Choice recording in the October issue. In his review Edward Seckerson observes that: 'Bychkov’s Russian roots make him mindful of Tchaikovsky’s classicism, the emotion always "contained" until it can be contained no more.'

In the video below Bychkov probes Tchaikovsky's music and creative process, and there is fascinating rehearsal footage of him preparing Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony with the Britten-Pears Orchestra at Snape Maltings:

Bychkov will conduct Tchaikovsky's music in three concerts with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican in London this week. The concert on October 19 will feature Piano Concerto No 2 and the Manfred, October 24 will include the Serenade for Strings and Francesca da Rimini, and October 26 will feature the Sixth Symphony alongside Rachmaninov's The Bells.
