The recording is featured on the duo's programme Notes of Old
Today’s Video of the Day is a performance of Reynaldo Hahn’s ‘À Chloris’ by mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston and pianist Sholto Kynoch. The video was recorded at St Georges Bristol by Andrew Staples. This song is the centre piece of the first half of their programme Notes of Old, that considers the echoes of older idioms in songs written for voice and piano.
In a programme where Bach and Schubert, Monteverdi and Viardot sit side by side; Hahn's glorious setting is the perfect example of a composer celebrating the French tradition that came before him, in his own style. Helen and Sholto return to Notes of Old this summer at LIFE Victoria Barcelona , Music at Paxton and the New Paths Festival
Helen says: ‘There's no escaping the echoes of the past in this glorious song: from the walking bass line that mirrors Bach's Air on the G string, to the decorative trills and emotive suspensions, Hahn invites us to time travel with him. There's such intimacy here. It's like opening the door to find a song that's been going for eternity, and for a few happy minutes we're all invited to join.’
Helen and Sholto close this year’s Oxford International Song Festival. Tickets for Oxford Song go on sale tomorrow (Friday 16th May) here.
