The free-form group performs a folk-influenced string work by an emerging composer

Our second video of the day from this forward-thinking ensemble, today's feature comes from Her Ensemble's latest album Clan, profiling the music of composer Joanna Borrett. 'Us' is the third movement from Borrett's 10 movement work Clan for string orchestra. It's only the second piece she has ever written as an emerging composer in her 60s, beginning life as a performer and cellist.

Clan
tells the tale of an ancient Scottish clan in 10 short movements. The narrative is outlined through the titles of the pieces, and within the character of the music. Borrett says, 'it’s an archetypal story left fairly open, and I hope performers will feel free to interpret it in their own way, based on their own experiences and feelings.' Borrett dedicated Clan to Her Ensemble after having such a wonderful time recording the work together.

The video comes from a recent Her Ensemble gig in Birmingham at the CrossCurrrents contemporary music festival.
