BBC Four to broadcast Angelic Voices
Monday, March 19, 2012
BBC Four is to broadcast a documentary about the choristers of Salisbury Cathedral for Easter. Angelic Voices will explore the lives of the 32 boys and girls currently in the choir and place this in the context of the lives of choristers 900 years ago. Directed by Cesca Eaton, the 90-minute film is designed to be a musical journey, taking in Plainsong, Polyphony, the Reformation, the 17th and 18th centuries and the compositions of today.
The documentary begins with Salisbury’s Easter Services and is filmed throughout the summer term. As choristers take viewers through their daily routines, the lives of choristers in the Middle Ages are also explored – when choristers lived with the canons and did chores in return for food, lodging and basic education. The programme also features analysis from Professor John Harper, director of the International Centre for Sacred Music Studies at Bangor University, and Salisbury Cathedral’s director of music, David Halls.
The documentary is due to be broadcast on March 25 at 9pm, and repeated on April 6 at 7.30pm. For more information see the BBC Four website and Wingspan Productions.
