Christian Zacharias first appeared in Gramophone's pages in November 1978 with his debut recording of Schubert's Piano Sonata No 18, D894. In her review at the time, Joan Chissell noted that 'Zacharias emerges as an extremely thoughtful player, someone seeking the musical truth rather than trying to spotlight himself.' 

And so it is a great pleasure to experience Schubert's music through the eyes of Zacharias in a new lecture-recital on Wigmore Hall's YouTube channel. The lecture was broadcast live so you may want to skip to the six-minute mark, after the audience have found their seats and Zacharias's microphone has been switched on. It's a deep dive into Schubert's musical world, but Zacharias consciously avoids jargon, making this video a fascinating watch for newcomers and aficionados alike.
