The Principal of the Birmingham Conservatoire talks to James Jolly

On Sunday, Prince Edward officially opened the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, a purpose-built new home in the centre of the city. Gramophone's James Jolly went to talk the Conservatoire's Principal Julian Lloyd Webber about the building, its facilities, music education and how he made the move from practising musician to head of a major institution.

The opening concert, in which the Conservatoire's Orchestra was conducted by CBSO Music Director Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, was broadcast last night by BBC Radio 3 and remains in the BBC's iPlayer for the next 27 days. Also, the individual category rounds of the 2018 BBC Young Musician come from the Conservatoire, and take place later this week.
