Paavo Järvi is bringing his Japanese orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, to Europe. For our latest podcast, James Jolly met up with the former Gramophone Artist of the Year to talk about the tour, their recent recording of music by Richard Strauss for Sony Classical (Don Juan and Ein Heldenleben), the music of Takemitsu and working as a guest conductor.

You can download Gramophone Podcasts for free - and subscribe to future Podcasts - through Gramophone's iTunes page. Alternatively, you can listen to it below.

Paavo Järvi and the NHK SO appear at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Monday, March 6 in a programme of Takemitsu’s Requiem for strings and Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. For ticket information visit the SouthBank Centre’s website.

You can also watch a film, recorded live in Japan, of Paavo Järvi and the NHK SO in the opening section of Richard Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben.
