Handel’s Ode for St Cecilia’s Day - which the music world marked on November 22 - is a celebration of nothing less than the art of music, exploring the mood created by different types of instruments as it sets John Dryden’s poem about the relationship between music, humanity and religion. A new recording has just been released by the Dunedin Consort, conducted by their music director John Butt, and also featuring soprano Carolyn Sampson, tenor Ian Bostridge and the Polish Radio Choir, and available on the Linn label.
