Apart from the more obvious respects in which this is a unique and moving disc, it is the only one I can think of where the sound of footsteps, those of a man walking the short distance from the foot of the concert platform to the piano behind him, can induce, if not a tear, then at least the intimation of one. The occasion of course was the late Gerald Moore's Farewell concert, and the moment comes at the end of his speech. After thanking the audience and the four individuals most closely concerned with the success of the event (apart from himself), he says that he would wish to end the evening ''like this''. For the last of many hundreds of times he moves to the piano, where those present had so often seen him, an essential part of so many evenings, and he plays his own arrangement of An die Musik. Beautifully done: it has that uncanny mastery of the singing tone and the finely proportioned weighting of the parts, left hand and right hand in duet, accompanied by a subtle piece of subdued pianistic orchestration, a perfect example of the art which for so long put him at the; head of his profession.
The new CD improves on the 1983 LP reissue. For one thing it is clear about the occasion. The LP was entitled ''An Evening With Gerald Moore'': 'an evening'! I never understood why it was presented in this way, and with the speech—the climax of the evening omitted. Anyway, it is included now, as is Schwarzkopfs performance of Wolfs Kennst du das Land, an event worth recording in any programme, and given here with a special grandeur in the third verse. Fischer-Dieskau's singing of Der Einsame, with Moore's stylish, witty playing, is not restored; and neither is the Cos fan tutte trio, which not even the original 1967 issue included. Of the other items, Im Abendrot is particularly fine, though irritating little coughs punctuate the quiet, rapt postlude. Nor do we really want the great volley of applause at the end of it—though that, and the audience's audible amusement and delight, are welcome features of the Rossini duets. Jeremy Siepmann contributes a brief but eloquent tribute in the CD booklet, on the front of which the unashamed accompanist is seen taking his final bow: the fitting conclusion to an honourable career.'
