Restraint is the keyword emerging from early reviews of Oliver Stone’s film on the terrorist attack on New York five years ago. It certainly has a bearing on the soundtrack by Scottish-born composer Craig Armstrong, for very little incident emerges across 18 cues. The dynamics are low and the tempo rarely reaches walking pace. The WTC theme, a soulful long-line melody on cello, returns on piano; however, the treatment carries unfortunate resonances of the middle-of-the-road playing style of Richard Clayderman. A mixed choral group take up the same theme in their own cue and then return, discreetly, in the cue Jimeno sees Jesus. But whether it be Jimeno or Jesus, John, Donna, Will, Alison or other characters listed in the cues, they all come out in the same pallid wash. If the intention was to numb the audience’s senses, then this soundtrack has succeeded.
