There is a good deal that is trivial here, notably the Waldteufel Pluie d'etoiles which goes on for too long, as does William Weide's set of variations on My Love is like a red red rose (11'27''!). However, the slightly garrulous quality of Virgil Thomson's At the Beach is endearing and Glazunov's Album leaf is effectively romantic. Best are the quirky items like Ibert's Impromptu with angular jazzy rhythmic feeling, and Marcel Bitsch's witty Variations on a Theme of Domenico Scarlatti, where there is some marvellously crisp articulation from Hardenberger, precise in the most captivating way. He plays with superb aplomb throughout and is just as communicative with a mute in Pontinen's crossover piece, The girl from Brasil which ends the recital atmospherically.
Vividly and realistically recorded too, this collection is essentially for trumpet fanciers and admirers of Hardenberger: 56 minutes of trumpet and piano (well balanced too) will not be everyone's choice.'
